Overtime vs. hire calculator

Cover it with overtime, or hire?

A gap that shows up every week is a structural one. This compares a year of premium hours against the cost of the heads that would close it, and finds the week the hire pays for itself.

The formula

How this is calculated.

  1. 1Overtime = gap hours × hourly cost × (1 + premium) × 52
  2. 2Hiring = FTE needed × contracted hours × hourly cost × 52, plus ramp cost
  3. 3Break-even = ramp cost ÷ weekly saving

What this model assumes.

  • This is cost only. Overtime is flexible and reversible; a hire is neither, and sustained overtime has its own effect on attrition that no model here captures.
